Jong Song is a beatboxing flutist, music theorist, and personal trainer living in New York City. As a classically trained flutist, Jong has performed in a variety of different ensembles and spaces, ranging from solo performances in Irish pubs, to being part of the World Peace Orchestra at David Geffen Hall. He also is an experienced improviser, and does his best to diversify, playing ina variety of styles. Jong's primary style of flute playing is beatbox flute, a new and exciting way of playing the flute. He hopes to spread the style to flute players around the world. Jong has studied with Kaoru Hinata, Kenneth Andrews at SUNY Potsdam, and Judith Mendenhall at the Aaron Copland School of Music. He gave a beatbox flute masterclass at the Mannes School of Music in May of 2019.
His scholarly interests include the study of the music of Astor Piazzolla, Schenkerian analysis, and pop and rock music. He is currently exploring recording and mixing techniques as agents of tension and release and possible articulations of form.
Jong has previously studied at Queens College, where he received a BA/MA dual degree in Music. He is currently studying at the CUNY Graduate Center where he is working toward a PhD in Music Theory.
